ANESTHETICS IN PLASTIC SURGERY

Anesthesia and plastic surgery are two young specialties which have complemented each other nicely, anesthesiology by itself began in the 19^th century, with the first anesthesia registered by Dr. T G Morton in Massachusetts, in a hospital in Boston, the following uses registered, were performed on 146 children with cleft palate and lip, with a good out come, but it’s in the 20^th century in the 60’s , when it’s really complemented with the cosmetic surgery boom, starting in the 60’s , in which technology improves dramatically the safety of anesthesia, with the creation of monitorization  equipments, as electrocardiographic  control, the arterial oxygen saturation, non invasive arterial pressure etc. which gave the anesthesiology doctors another tool for the peri operative control of the patients who are undergoing a surgical operation.  

Cosmetic surgery is better known each day and has gathered a diverse range of patients that although have very different physical conditions, all have the same goal to look better. Anesthesiology tries to offer them more security and which is accomplished by a good pre-operative evaluation, to determine different pathologies that can not be easily determined or that don’t present symptoms and many patients consider themselves healthy and don’t want to have unfortunate events in their surgical intervention. 

Thanks to the evolution of new drugs, new techniques, and new anesthesia techniques to control the physical standards, risks are each day smaller. We should mention that the success also depends of the ability, experience and knowledge of who gives the anesthesia in the different procedures. 

The anesthesia in cosmetic surgery has developed different techniques to improve the patients’ and the surgeons’ comfort, so the operation process, the recovery and the post operative stay can be short. This has made the concept of out-patient surgery develop, in which the patient enters the medical center in the morning, undergoes the stipulated procedure and goes back home the same day, accompanied by a responsible person who can help during the recovery, it could be a family member or friend, the patient must also keep in touch with the doctor. 

The new techniques for the different plastic surgery procedures vary. The procedure could be done under general anesthesia, local plus sedation, regional blockade or conductive anesthesia. Thanks to the existence of new drugs the outcome is more satisfactory for everyone, also the patient wakes up faster, thanks to the development of drugs with shorter effect and quicker elimination allows the patient to have just a brief stay in the recovery room.  

All procedure has its risk, but a good evaluation, an exhaustive analysis of the whole process and the patient’s full knowledge of the pros and cons, will lead to a happy ending without serious complications to lament.
